Chefchaouen

Every shade of blue you can imagine, painted onto a mountain town in the Rif. Chefchaouen is small, calm, and almost impossibly photogenic — the place travelers plan two days for and stay five.

The pace here is slow on purpose. Come down from the hikes, order a nous-nous, and watch the town turn indigo at dusk.

Don't miss

Top things to do

  1. 1Blue medina photo walk — wander without a map; every corner is a postcard, and the light is best before 9am.
  2. 2Spanish Mosque at sunset — an easy 30-minute hike to the classic panorama of the whole blue town.
  3. 3Ras El Maa waterfall — where the town meets the mountain spring; join locals cooling off and doing laundry the traditional way.
  4. 4Plaza Uta el-Hammam — café-lined main square under the kasbah, perfect for people-watching over tea.
  5. 5Hike Talassemtane National Park — cedar forests and God's Bridge, a natural stone arch, an easy day trip.
  6. 6Taste the local goat cheese — the Rif specialty, best fresh from the morning market.
